Developers are responsible for testing their code prior to its alpha or beta release. Traditionally, this has meant that you walk through your code line-by-line inside a debugger. To do so, developers often create a crude user interface (or test harness) that can be used to simulate standard user interaction, edge cases, and error conditions. This approach is problematic for a number of reasons. First, it relies on the developer to re-execute tests after each change. Along the same lines, it is not automated and repeatable by other developers or testers. Last, it relies on the developer to confirm that all code gets tested. The result of following this approach is a lower quality product released to the test team. What was needed was a more formal process for developer testing. As a result, the concept of a unit test evolved. A unit test is a test that isolates a portion of your application and tests all conditions (typically one-by-one) of that unit. Unit tests can be manual or automated. A manual unit test is one that is documented and then executed by a developer. Manual unit tests have many of the same problems mentioned previously. However, automated unit tests seek to solve these problems.

When query execution takes significantly longer than expected, you need to first identify the slow-running queries and then determine the reason for the delay. Slowrunning queries can be caused by performance problems related to your network, to the server on which SQL Server is running, or to the physical database design.
